Chapter 13

Lenny Welch was up in the early hours of the morning, shivering in the cold room as he pulled on several layers of warm clothes, including a thick pair of corduroy trousers and a woollen hat with a flashlight attached to it by means of an elastic strap. The shin-high boots he had brought with him on the off chance of fitting in some serious walking over the weekend were already on the floor beside his bed, a thick woollen sock in each, and he quickly forced his feet into them and tied up the laces. Okay, so the gear wasn’t ideal for a six- to seven-mile trek through thick snow to the village the Parsonses had spoken about, but it was all he had, so it would have to do, and with his current level of fitness, he felt confident that he could manage it. He had no idea what the village offered in terms of shelter and communication with the outside world, but anything was better than staying at Warneford Hall waiting to be attacked by some homicidal psychopath. He felt no guilt about running out on his former housemates. After all, it wasn’t clear whether the killer of Abbey and Jimmy might not be one of them anyway and as far as he was concerned, with Abbey gone, it was everyone for themselves. He was sorry to leave his nice new Mercedes convertible behind, but consoled himself with the thought that he could easily arrange for a garage to collect it in the next few days once the snow had thawed sufficiently.

Making some coffee, he filled a flask and slipped it into his rucksack with some sausage rolls, pork pies and apples he had helped himself to from the kitchen earlier. Then he left the room with the rucksack strapped to his back over a fleece-lined khaki coat. Prepared as much as he could be for the challenging hike ahead of him.

The corridor outside his room was still in darkness, but his flashlight enabled him to see his way clearly as he quietly headed for the stairs and descended to the hall. It was deserted. The front door was unlocked and opened easily, admitting a blast of cold air and what felt like some fine rain. Exactly what was needed to help disperse the snow. Maybe the much awaited thaw was on the way, he thought. But if it was, he had no intention of waiting for it.

Outside, the scene had a magical quality in the light of a misty moon. It resembled a clip from a Walt Disney fairy-tale production. But he was not interested in the aesthetics of the situation, only in the depth of the snow, which rose halfway up his calves when his booted feet sank into it. Hugging into his coat, he crunched his way across the forecourt on to the tree-lined driveway leading towards the main entrance, forced to lift his feet in an exaggerated stride at virtually every step to make any real headway.
